Air quality in Europe

Research modelled the economic effects of the improvement of air quality in Europe. This is a side effect of the reduction of polluting emissions which includes carbon dioxide.

A comparison has been made between policy scenarios from two representative concentration pathways. The integrated assessment model presupposes a global uniform tax on all greenhouse gas emissions. It estimates the physical impacts and the economic benefits of pollution reductions on human health and on key assets.

The models generated interesting insights for Europe. The total pollution costs would be reduced by 84% in the mitigation scenario compatible with +2°C.

Moreover, it has been found that the discounted cumulative ancillary benefits are equal to about €1.7, between 2015 and 2100. That represents €17 per abated tone of carbon dioxide.
